The history of the United Nations
Joan Llonch and Xavier Trilla
The United Nations was founded in 1945 in an attempt to restore peace in a world destroyed by World War II. Nowadays, the organization brings together 193 states and is one of the most prominent actors on the international scene, playing a key role in aspects such as the preservation of international security, the protection of human rights, the promotion of human development and the achievement of a model of sustainable growth. However, during its more than 60 years of existence, the organization has had to face challenges that have, at times, endangered its survival, and now the heiress of the League of Nations faces its future with a series of questions and outstanding issues.
The President of UNSA Barcelona, Joan Llonch, reflects on these and many other issues in this article, written for ESCI UPF together with Xavier Trilla.
